Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has praised the Indian diaspora for its peaceful conduct and contribution to host countries, contrasting it with violent unrest in parts of Europe. Addressing the Indian community in Berlin during his recent visit to Germany, Goyal said Indians had earned respect internationally by avoiding vandalism and disturbances, even as protests continued across France, Italy and other European nations.

Goyal described Indians living overseas as hardworking, family-oriented and respectful of local laws.

He said the Indian community was welcomed in countries such as Germany because of its reputation for peaceful behaviour and responsible civic conduct.

The minister contrasted this with incidents of vandalism and public disorder during recent European demonstrations, while acknowledging that exceptions could exist within any community.

His remarks also come amid political demonstrations in India against the Election Commission, although his comments were primarily directed towards Indians living abroad.

France and Italy Witness Violent Street Protests

Several European countries have experienced demonstrations over rising living costs, wages, education, housing and public services.

In France, student-led demonstrations expanded into wider protests, with some incidents involving clashes with police, property damage and looting.

Italy also witnessed violent disturbances in Milan and other cities, prompting authorities to strengthen security arrangements.

While many demonstrations remained peaceful, incidents of rioting raised concerns about public safety and economic disruption.

Goyal Urges Indian Diaspora to Support Students

During his interaction in Berlin, Goyal encouraged established Indian residents to assist students arriving in Germany, particularly those from financially disadvantaged families.

He said community support could help newcomers adjust to unfamiliar surroundings and pursue educational opportunities.

The minister’s Germany visit also focused on expanding bilateral trade, investment, manufacturing and technological cooperation.

He highlighted the Indian diaspora’s contribution to strengthening economic and people-to-people relations between the two countries.
