Piyush Goyal Files FIR Over AI Deepfake
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has filed a police complaint over an AI-manipulated video that falsely portrayed him making threatening remarks about students participating in protests.

Goyal said an FIR was registered at Delhi’s Chanakyapuri Police Station at 4.35 am on July 25, 2026. The case was recorded as FIR No. 123/26 following his complaint about the allegedly fabricated video circulating across social media platforms.
The minister said footage of his interaction with reporters outside Parliament had been maliciously altered using artificial intelligence. He alleged that the manipulated clip was created and distributed to spread misinformation among the public.
Fake Video Targeted Student Protesters
The viral video purported to show Goyal making threatening comments about students involved in ongoing protests over alleged irregularities in medical entrance and other competitive examinations.
The government’s fact-checking unit examined the footage and declared it fake and AI-generated. It also alleged that the manipulated clip was being circulated by Pakistan-linked propaganda accounts. Goyal maintained that he had made no such remarks about the protesting students.
Independent fact-checking assessments also identified signs of synthetic audio manipulation in the circulating footage.
Government Warns Against AI Misinformation
Goyal said strict legal action would be pursued against people involved in creating, distributing or knowingly amplifying the video. He added that the irresponsible use of artificial intelligence to mislead citizens would not be tolerated.
Several social media links carrying the manipulated footage have reportedly been removed. Authorities are expected to investigate the video’s origin and identify those responsible for its production and circulation.
Goyal also urged citizens, particularly young social media users, to verify viral claims and depend on authenticated information.
