Piyush Goyal Defends Farms Products In US Trade Talks
India pushed strongly to protect its agricultural sector during negotiations with the United States trade agreement, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said, highlighting that sensitive farm products remained a key concern in the talks.
India US Trade Deal Farm Protection says Piyush Goyal
Piyush Goyal stated that India adopted a defensive approach in agriculture while discussing tariff reductions and market access. The government aimed to ensure domestic farmers were not exposed to sudden competition from subsidised American farm products such as dairy and certain crops.
He noted that agriculture remains a livelihood sector for millions in India, making it different from purely commercial sectors covered under trade liberalisation frameworks. As a result, negotiators prioritised safeguarding rural income and food security while exploring cooperation in non-farm sectors.
Market Access And Tariff Negotiations
During discussions, both countries examined ways to expand trade in goods and services. India sought improved access for labour-intensive exports including textiles, engineering goods and pharmaceuticals, while the United States focused on lowering barriers for its agricultural and industrial products.
Officials emphasised that negotiations involved balancing domestic sensitivities with opportunities to increase bilateral trade volumes. The government indicated talks were progressing but required careful calibration due to differences in regulatory standards and subsidy structures.
Strategic Importance Of Trade Talks
The minister said the agreement could strengthen economic ties and supply chain cooperation between the two countries. The deal is being negotiated as part of a broader effort to diversify export markets and enhance investment flows.
Authorities reiterated that India would not compromise on core national interests while pursuing trade expansion, particularly in sectors affecting small farmers and rural communities.
