Vijayan submitted his resignation after the LDF suffered a major electoral defeat. The outgoing Chief Minister had led Kerala for two consecutive terms, making the result a significant political setback for the CPI(M)-led alliance.

The LDF had created history in 2021 by returning to power for a second consecutive term, breaking Kerala’s traditional pattern of alternating governments. However, the 2026 verdict has reversed that momentum and pushed the Left out of office.

New Kerala Government Formation Begins

With Vijayan asked to continue as caretaker Chief Minister, the focus now shifts to the UDF’s government formation process. The Congress-led front is expected to begin consultations on leadership and cabinet formation before the formal swearing-in.
