Philippines Seeks More Military Equipment from India

During a state visit to India from August 4 to 8, 2025, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is discussing a significant expansion of defence cooperation with Indian officials. A key focus is Manila’s interest in buying more military equipment from India.

Plans for New Missile and Naval Purchases

The Philippines previously signed a contract in 2022 for BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. India delivered the first batch in April 2024, followed by a second batch in April 2025, under a $375 million deal. Now, Manila plans to acquire additional units of BrahMos and explore purchasing Akash short-range air defence missiles, with a proposed deal of around $200 million in 2025.

Military Leadership Endorses Further Deals

In a recent statement, Philippine Armed Forces chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. confirmed that Manila “is in fact ordering more equipment and weapon systems from India.” He noted India’s products are seen as reliable and well-priced.

Joint Naval Exercises Signal Strategic Alignment

India and the Philippines recently conducted their first-ever joint naval sail in the South China Sea, reinforcing their defence cooperation and signaling a shared interest in maritime security amid rising regional tensions.

Bigger Push for Defence Modernisation

The Philippines is fast‑tracking a broad defence modernisation program called “Re‑Horizon 3,” funded with about $35 billion through 2028. This includes upgrading air defence, coastal security, and maritime surveillance. India is emerging as a key supplier alongside other partners in Southeast Asia.

Strategic Shift in Southeast Asia

Philippines’ shift toward India reflects its aim to reduce dependence on traditional partners and build a diversified military base. Shared security concerns over South China Sea disputes, especially with China, are driving this deepening cooperation. India aims to double its defence exports by 2029, making countries like the Philippines important partners.
