Philippines Reaches Iran Understanding On Seafarers

The Philippines says it has reached a “positive understanding” with Iran on the safety of Filipino seafarers and the security of the country’s energy supplies, as tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz continue to threaten commercial shipping. The development comes as Manila tries to protect both its overseas maritime workers and vital fuel imports from disruption.

Philippines Iran Talks On Seafarer Safety

Philippine Foreign Minister Ma. Theresa Lazaro said she held a productive call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and that the two sides agreed on the need to protect Filipino seafarers operating in the region. The understanding is significant because thousands of Filipino crew members work on vessels transiting high-risk waters linked to the Gulf.

Strait Of Hormuz Risks Remain High

The issue has taken on greater urgency because the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive shipping routes, especially during the ongoing Iran war. Filipino authorities had earlier flagged thousands of their nationals as being in high-risk maritime zones, including the Arabian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. Manila has been closely watching the situation as attacks, insurance uncertainty and route disruptions continue to affect shipping in the region.

Energy Supply Security Also In Focus

The talks were not limited to worker safety. The Philippine side also said the discussion produced a positive understanding on energy supply security, an important issue for a country heavily dependent on imported oil and fuel shipments passing through Middle East sea lanes. The diplomatic outreach suggests Manila is trying to avoid both a humanitarian problem for seafarers and a domestic energy shock at home as the regional conflict continues.
