Petrol Bomb Targets Shakib Al Hasan’s Home
A petrol bomb was thrown at former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan’s ancestral home in Magura shortly after he participated in Sheikh Hasina’s virtual media interaction in New Delhi. The unoccupied property sustained fire and vandalism damage, but no injuries were reported.
Shakib Al Hasan House Attacked
Unidentified attackers targeted the house in Magura’s Keshab More area on Wednesday evening. Windows were smashed before petrol bombs were thrown towards the property, starting a fire on its upper floor.
Emergency responders brought the fire under control. Shakib and his relatives were not present when the attack occurred, and authorities began investigating the incident and those responsible.
Footage showing flames and damage at the property later circulated online.
Hasina Delhi Event Sparks Tensions
The attack occurred after Shakib joined a virtual media interaction featuring former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. While the timing raised suspicion of a political motive, investigators had not publicly established a direct link between his participation and the violence.
Hasina used the event to announce that she intended to return to Bangladesh in December 2026 despite facing arrest and a death sentence. She also demanded that restrictions on the Awami League be removed.
Bangladesh condemned the New Delhi event, while India said it was privately organised and had no government involvement.
Shakib Faces Political Scrutiny
Shakib entered politics as an Awami League candidate and was elected to Parliament from Magura-1 in January 2024. He has remained outside Bangladesh since Hasina’s government was removed following the August 2024 uprising.
The former all-rounder has since faced several criminal investigations connected to events surrounding the unrest. He has denied wrongdoing in cases involving him.
The attack underlines the continuing political hostility surrounding former Awami League representatives and public figures associated with Hasina.
