Peter Navarro Criticizes India Over Tariffs, Oil as Trade Talks Start

Peter Navarro, U.S. trade adviser, sharply criticized India over its oil purchases from Russia and its high trade barriers. He accused Indian refiners of profiting from unfair trade, claiming that money made from U.S. trade reaches Russian oil markets and ultimately funds weapons. He also called India the “Maharajah of tariffs.”

Trade Talks Resuming

These remarks come as a U.S. trade delegation led by Brendan Lynch is set to arrive in New Delhi for talks on a bilateral trade deal. Navarro said India is “coming to the table,” indicating willingness to negotiate, especially on tariff and non-tariff barriers.

Indian Government’s Stand

India rejected Navarro’s claims. The Ministry of External Affairs called his comments misleading and demanded evidence for assertions about profiteering or unfair oil deals. Indian officials emphasized that India’s energy purchases are a matter of national security and not profit from war.

Wider Context

Tensions have risen since late August when the U.S. imposed additional tariffs on Indian goods. These measures are linked to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The new tariffs raised duties to as much as 50% for exporters, significantly impacting exports to the U.S. Trade sources say both sides are under pressure to reach common ground.
