Parliamentary Panel Urges Review of National Highway Toll Policies

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has recommended that the central government reassess the current toll tax regulations governing India’s National Highways. The committee’s report highlights concerns over the financial burden on commuters and the need for a more equitable tolling system.

The PAC’s evaluation indicates that the existing toll structure may disproportionately affect frequent travelers and those residing near toll plazas. The committee suggests exploring alternative models, such as distance-based tolling or implementing discounts for local commuters, to alleviate financial strain and promote fairness.

Additionally, the report emphasizes the importance of transparency in toll collection and the necessity for regular audits to ensure accountability. The PAC advocates for improved infrastructure maintenance funded by toll revenues, ensuring that commuters receive value for the fees paid.

The committee also calls for enhanced public consultation processes when establishing new toll plazas or revising toll rates, ensuring that stakeholders’ concerns are adequately addressed.

In response, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has acknowledged the PAC’s recommendations and is considering a comprehensive review of the toll policy framework. The ministry aims to balance revenue generation for infrastructure development with the public’s interest, ensuring a fair and efficient tolling system.
