Parliament Disrupted Over Trade Deal, Naravane Book
Proceedings in Parliament’s Budget Session were disrupted as opposition members clashed with the government over multiple issues, including the India–US trade deal and references to a book by former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane. The Lok Sabha witnessed repeated interruptions during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address.
Rahul Gandhi Raises Objections
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi attempted to cite excerpts from a book attributed to General Naravane while speaking on India–China relations. The Speaker disallowed the reference, stating that unpublished or unauthorised material cannot be quoted in the House. This led to protests from opposition benches and heightened exchanges.
Trade Deal Debate Demanded
Opposition MPs also sought a detailed discussion on the India–US trade agreement, saying Parliament had not been adequately briefed on its terms and implications. The government maintained that discussions would follow established parliamentary procedure. Continued disruptions eventually led to adjournment of the House, with some members facing disciplinary action.
The episode highlighted sharp political divisions as lawmakers debated national security, foreign policy, and trade during the ongoing Budget Session.
