Palestine Applies for BRICS Membership

Palestine has formally applied for full membership in the BRICS bloc, according to its ambassador to Russia, Abdel-Hafiz Nofal. He stated the application has been sent and that Palestine will continue as a guest in BRICS until its membership is approved.

China’s Reaction

China expressed a welcoming stance toward Palestine’s application, noting it is open to admitting more like-minded partners into BRICS.

BRICS Expansion Background

The BRICS group — originally Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — has expanded its membership in recent years, with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia joining. Palestine’s bid reflects growing ambition for its inclusion in global economic forums.

Challenges and Next Steps

While the application is on record, approval requires consensus among BRICS members. During the interim, Palestine’s participation as a guest may allow limited engagement — though full rights and decision-making roles remain on hold. The move also adds a new dimension to Palestinian diplomacy, seeking deeper economic and geopolitical alliances amid changing global alignments.
