Pakistan’s Entry into Asia Cup Hockey Looks Unlikely

As the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup approaches, Pakistan’s participation in the tournament appears increasingly doubtful. With the event set to take place from August 29 to September 9 in Bihar, and tensions high following a recent terror attack, Hockey India has indicated it may not receive clearance for entry.

Pakistan Asia Cup

A senior official from Hockey India stated they are “in contact with the government” regarding the situation, but added that “I don’t think the Pakistan team will be allowed to participate.” This confirmation comes amid growing unease over hosting Pakistan under the current security climate.

Security Concerns

The June Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives, has heightened scrutiny of Pakistan’s travel to India. Concerns range from safe transit to on-ground protection, and lawmakers have voiced opposition to granting permission for Pakistan to enter the country, citing the incident’s risks and symbolism.

Government Involvement

Hockey India emphasised that its decisions will follow government guidelines. As the official pointedly remarked: “first I am a citizen of India… whatever the country and the government decides, Hockey India will follow that.” With the government holding ultimate authority, the hockey association is awaiting formal clearance or denial.

Tournament Impact

Pakistan’s absence would affect the Asia Cup’s competitive balance and fan engagement. The India–Pakistan hockey rivalry draws significant attention, and its exclusion could dampen excitement and alter qualification dynamics, given the tournament also acts as a gateway to the 2026 FIH World Cup.

Outlook

With less than two months remaining, Hockey India and the Ministry of Home Affairs are expected to make a final call. Refuge in caution appears to be the guiding principle for now. A decision either way will confirm whether India–Pakistan hockey rivalry on home soil will continue or be set aside in the interests of security.
