Pakistan Thanks China for Diluting UNSC Statement
Following the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 people, the United Nations Security Council issued a condemnation. However, the language adopted in the final statement was significantly softer than expected. Instead of directly mentioning India, the statement called for cooperation with “all relevant authorities,” a notable shift from the UNSC’s usual practice of explicitly naming India in such contexts. This toning down has been attributed to diplomatic maneuvers involving Pakistan and its close ally, China.
China Pakistan Diplomacy
Pakistan has publicly thanked China for its role in ensuring that the UNSC statement reflected a more neutral tone. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated Beijing’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s sovereignty and security concerns. Advocating restraint, China called for an impartial investigation into the Pahalgam incident. The diplomatic support highlights the strengthening of China-Pakistan ties, especially in sensitive international platforms where narrative management is crucial for Islamabad.
This intervention by China aligns with its broader strategy of backing Pakistan in global forums, particularly when tensions escalate between India and Pakistan. By ensuring a diluted statement, Beijing has once again demonstrated its willingness to act as a shield for Pakistan in multilateral negotiations.
India Pakistan Tensions
The UNSC’s softened stance has added further friction to already strained India-Pakistan relations. In response to the Pahalgam attack, India has adopted a series of tough measures, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and the expulsion of several Pakistani diplomats. Domestically, India has also accelerated counter-terrorism operations in Kashmir, launching widespread search campaigns and making multiple arrests.
Meanwhile, calls for restraint have continued, with China urging both countries to avoid actions that could escalate tensions further. However, India remains firm on its stand that without dismantling the infrastructure of terror, peace in the region remains a distant dream.
