Pakistan’s military launched a series of air and ground strikes on major Afghan cities on Friday after weeks of escalating border clashes, marking a sharp escalation in tensions with neighbouring Afghanistan. Islamabad’s defence leadership said its “patience has overflowed” following what it described as repeated attacks on Pakistani forces along the disputed border, calling the situation an “open war” with Kabul’s authorities.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister said Islamabad had exhausted its patience after months of cross-border violence and militant attacks that it blames on armed groups based in Afghan territory. The strikes, part of an operation Islamabad named Operation Ghazab Lil Haq, reportedly targeted Taliban military sites in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia provinces. Pakistani officials described the air and ground offensive as a direct response to what they called “unprovoked” attacks on Pakistani border posts and bases along the Durand Line, the 2,600-kilometre frontier between the two countries. Pakistan accused the Afghan administration of harbouring militants and allowing attacks on its soil.
