Pakistan PM Faces Backlash Over Gaza Peace Board U-Turn
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has come under criticism at home after endorsing and signing the Gaza “Board of Peace” initiative launched by US President Donald Trump during the World Economic Forum in Davos. Sharif’s government joined the board aimed at supporting ceasefire efforts, humanitarian aid and longer-term peace in the Gaza region.
Earlier Opposition
Critics have pointed out that in 2020, when Trump first proposed a Middle East peace plan, Sharif had strongly opposed that proposal, describing it as biased and unjust. His current participation in the new board has been described by some political opponents as inconsistent with his earlier stance.
Domestic Reaction
Several opposition figures and political parties in Pakistan, including senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and other activists, have criticised the decision to join the board. They argue the step was taken without wide consultation and could undermine Pakistan’s traditional support for Palestinian self-determination within the United Nations framework.
Government’s Defence
The Pakistani government maintains that joining the peace initiative reflects its desire to contribute to lasting peace and increased support for Gaza reconstruction and humanitarian relief.
