Pakistan Open To Talks With Afghanistan – With Conditions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Islamabad is ready to engage in talks with Afghanistan, but only under “legitimate and mutually respectful conditions.” He added that the decision now lies with Kabul to respond.

Ceasefire and diplomatic posture

Sharif noted that Pakistan had agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire at Afghanistan’s request, aiming to reduce tensions. He called for dialogue to resolve outstanding issues, emphasizing that discussions must respect each nation’s sovereignty.

Border clashes as backdrop

The announcement comes after several days of sharp cross-border clashes, during which both sides accused each other of violating territorial limits and supporting militant groups operating across the border.

Stakes and region’s gaze

Observers say Pakistan is trying to balance military pressure with diplomatic overtures. The condition-based offer for talks underscores Islamabad’s reluctance to appear weak, while also opening a pathway to de-escalate if Afghanistan accedes to its demands.
