Pakistan Officer Who Captured Wing Commander Abhinandan Killed in Attack
A Pakistani army major widely believed to have been involved in the capture of Indian Air Force pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman following the February 2019 aerial skirmish has been killed in an ambush in Balochistan. The attack, which occurred late last week, marks the latest in a string of militant assaults on security forces in the restive province and has raised fresh concerns about regional stability.
The officer, identified as Major Hamza, was reportedly traveling in an armored convoy near the Zhob district when militants opened fire early one morning. Despite efforts to repel the assault, both Major Hamza and two of his escorts succumbed to their injuries. Local law enforcement and military units secured the area and retrieved the bodies while launching a counter-terror operation aimed at tracking down the attackers.
Major Hamza rose to national prominence in Pakistan when he led the operation that detained Abhinandan Varthaman after the Indian pilot ejected over Pakistan-administered territory and landed behind enemy lines. The incident sparked a diplomatic crisis, but Varthaman was eventually returned to India and the crisis de-escalated. Hamza was later honoured with a gallantry award for his leadership in combat.
