Pakistan My Birthplace, India My Heart: Former Cricketer

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has denied speculation about seeking Indian citizenship, saying that while Pakistan is his “Janmabhoomi” (birthplace), he regards India as his “Matrubhumi” (motherland). He affirmed he has no current plans to change his nationality.

Clarifying The Rumours

Kaneria, who now lives in the United States with his family, made the remarks in response to social media speculation about his allegiance. He emphasised that his comments are emotional and personal, not political. He also asserted his pride in maintaining Pakistani citizenship.

Cultural Affinity Over Political Move

While rejecting any legal shift in nationality, Kaneria described India as a spiritual connection and ancestral home. He noted that if he ever considered applying for Indian citizenship in the future, existing laws like the Citizenship (Amendment) Act would apply to him, but reiterated that he has no such intent now.

Reaction And Issues Raised

His statements have drawn attention across media, especially amid recent political tensions and sporting controversies between India and Pakistan. Some see his remarks as unique given the strained relations, while others view them as an expression of cross-border cultural sentiment.
