Pakistan Army Accuses Taliban of Aiding Infiltration
The Pakistan Army has alleged that the Afghan Taliban is enabling terrorist and smuggler infiltration across the border. The claim was made by ISPR Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry during a media briefing in Islamabad, where he said Pakistan had recorded multiple incidents over recent months.
Taliban Accused of Providing Cover Fire
According to Chaudhry, Taliban fighters have opened fire on Pakistani border posts to provide “cover fire” for infiltrators attempting to cross through gaps between posts. He said the attempts appeared coordinated and involved both militants and illegal smugglers who exploit difficult terrain and unmonitored stretches.
Border Still Difficult to Seal
Chaudhry stated that Pakistan has placed military outposts every 15 to 25 kilometres along the 2,500-km border but admitted that it is impossible to completely seal the frontier. He compared the situation to the U.S.–Mexico border, where illegal crossings continue despite advanced surveillance.
Pakistan Intensifies Operations
The army says it has stepped up intelligence-based operations and claimed several hundred militants have been neutralised this year. Pakistan has also indicated it is open to third-party mechanisms if the Taliban does not act against groups using Afghan territory to target Pakistan.
