Over 40 Lakh FASTag Annual Passes Issued Since August

More than 40 lakh FASTag annual passes have been issued across India since August, reflecting growing adoption of digital tolling solutions on national highways. The update was shared by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, who also reiterated the government’s plan to roll out a fully barrier-free toll collection system by 2026.

What the FASTag Annual Pass Offers

The FASTag annual pass is priced at ₹3,000 and is available for private non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans. It allows up to 200 toll transactions or one year of usage, whichever comes earlier, on national highways and expressways. The scheme is aimed at frequent highway users, offering predictable costs and reducing the need for repeated recharges at toll plazas.

Push Toward Barrier-Free Tolling

Gadkari said the government is moving steadily toward a multi-lane free flow tolling system that will eliminate physical toll barriers. Under the planned model, vehicles will be charged automatically through electronic and sensor-based systems without the need to slow down or stop. The shift is expected to cut travel time, reduce congestion and lower fuel consumption caused by idling at toll booths.

Digital Highway Infrastructure Focus

The minister noted that FASTag adoption has already improved toll efficiency and transparency. The annual pass and upcoming barrier-free system are part of a broader effort to modernise highway infrastructure using digital tools. Authorities believe these measures will significantly improve the travel experience while supporting economic efficiency in road transport.
