Over 3,100 Indians Deported from US in 2025
As of November 21, 2025, a total of 3,155 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States and sent back to India, the government informed Parliament. This represents a sharp increase compared with 2024 and 2023, when 1,368 and 617 Indians respectively were deported.
Reasons and Process Behind Deportations
The majority of deportations this year involve individuals who overstayed visas, entered the US illegally, lacked valid documentation, or were found in violation of immigration laws. US authorities typically carry out repatriation after verifying nationality and immigration status. The Indian government has cooperated with the US to facilitate safe and prompt return of deportees.
State-wise Impact and Ongoing Oversight
Many deportees reportedly hail from states such as Punjab and Haryana, which have seen a high number of removals in recent months. Indian authorities have stated that all deportees undergo standard verification before being accepted back into the country. Families are notified, and efforts are made to ensure dignified return, though some civil society groups have voiced concern over humanitarian and legal aspects of the process.
Broader Significance
The increase in deportations reflects stricter immigration enforcement policies in the US in 2025. For India, the numbers highlight the continuing challenge of irregular migration and the need for more effective legal channels for overseas employment. The government has urged citizens travelling abroad to follow immigration rules and warned against illegal migration routes.
