Over 2 Lakh Objections to Bihar Voter Roll
The Election Commission (EC) has received more than 200,000 objections from residents in Bihar seeking the removal of their names from the draft voter list. These applications, submitted by 3 p.m. on the closing day, largely stem from duplicate registrations—people registered across multiple polling stations, constituencies, or states.
Electoral Integrity Drive
These deletion requests are part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, intended to clean up the rolls and eliminate outdated or duplicate entries. The SIR allows citizens and parties to file claims or objections and ensures the final electoral roll accurately reflects eligible voters.
Political Tensions Over the Roll
Amid this process, political contention has surged. The Congress party alleges it submitted 89 lakh complaints citing irregularities, though the EC disputes this, stating those submissions did not follow the required format. Opposition leaders maintain the SIR has harmed voters’ rights, especially in marginalized areas. The matter is further compounded by Supreme Court directives demanding transparency, including public lists of deleted names.
