Operation Olivia: Coast Guard Protects 6.98 Lakh Olive Ridley Turtles
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has successfully concluded the 2025 edition of Operation Olivia, its flagship marine conservation initiative aimed at protecting Olive Ridley turtles during their annual nesting season along Odisha’s coast. This year, the operation safeguarded a record 6.98 lakh turtles across key nesting sites, including Gahirmatha Beach and the Rushikulya river mouth.
Record Nesting at Rushikulya River Mouth
One of the standout events this season was the mass nesting observed in February 2025 at the Rushikulya river mouth. Conservationists hailed this as one of the highest turnout events in recent years, reinforcing the ecological success of sustained protection measures.
The Olive Ridley turtle, classified as vulnerable, arrives in large numbers each year to nest along the eastern coastline of India. Operation Olivia ensures that this process is uninterrupted by human or commercial activities, especially illegal fishing practices and habitat encroachment.
Extensive Surveillance and Patrolling Efforts
Between November 2024 and May 2025, the Indian Coast Guard conducted over 5,387 surface patrol sorties and 1,768 aerial surveillance missions as part of the operation. These efforts were aimed at deterring illegal trawling and ensuring undisturbed nesting zones.
The ICG detained 366 boats found operating in restricted areas or violating fishing regulations during this period. These enforcement actions were instrumental in reducing threats from fishing nets, poaching, and pollution, all of which severely impact turtle populations during nesting and hatching cycles.
Focus on Community Engagement and Sustainable Fishing
Beyond enforcement, Operation Olivia is rooted in long-term community engagement. The Coast Guard collaborated with local fishermen to promote the use of Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs), designed to allow turtles to escape from fishing nets without harming the catch.
Additionally, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with local NGOs and marine conservation bodies to spread awareness and conduct training sessions in coastal villages. These programs aim to create a balance between marine life protection and the livelihood of fishing communities.
The continued success of Operation Olivia stands as a model for wildlife conservation integrated with coastal security and community partnership. With each passing year, the initiative not only strengthens India’s ecological commitment but also builds local stewardship for protecting one of the world’s most important marine turtle populations.
