OpenAI Taps Tata For 100MW AI Capacity
OpenAI has partnered with the Tata Group to secure large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure capacity in India, beginning with 100 megawatts and with plans to scale up to 1 gigawatt over time. The move signals a significant expansion of AI computing infrastructure in the country.
OpenAI And Tata Partnership For AI Data Centres
Under the agreement, OpenAI will leverage Tata’s upcoming AI-focused data centre infrastructure to deploy an initial 100MW of AI-ready capacity in India. The facilities are expected to support advanced AI workloads, including large language model training and inference operations. The infrastructure will be designed to handle high-density computing requirements associated with next-generation AI systems.
The collaboration marks one of the largest AI infrastructure commitments announced in India to date.
Plan To Scale AI Capacity To 1GW
The partnership includes a roadmap to expand the infrastructure footprint to 1GW of AI data centre capacity. If realised, this would position India among key global hubs for concentrated AI compute power. Scaling to this level would require phased investments in power, cooling technologies and network connectivity to support large-scale AI deployments.
The long-term plan reflects growing demand for AI computing resources across enterprise and research sectors.
Boost To India’s AI Infrastructure Ecosystem
The agreement aligns with India’s ambition to strengthen its domestic AI infrastructure ecosystem. Expanded compute capacity is expected to benefit enterprises, developers and startups building AI-driven applications. The collaboration also highlights increasing interest from global AI firms in investing in India’s digital infrastructure.
The development underscores India’s emerging role in global AI capacity expansion and advanced data centre growth.
