OpenAI Signs $38 B Cloud Deal With AWS

OpenAI has agreed to a seven-year cloud computing partnership worth US $38 billion with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The deal will give OpenAI access to hundreds of thousands of advanced NVIDIA GPUs via AWS to train and run its large-scale AI models. The entire infrastructure is expected to be fully deployed by the end of 2026, with further expansion into 2027 and beyond.

Strategic Shift from Microsoft

The agreement marks a major shift for OpenAI away from an exclusive cloud relationship with Microsoft Corporation. Under the new terms, OpenAI is now free to partner with other major cloud providers, which signals a broader diversification of its infrastructure strategy.

Significance for AWS and the AI Market

For AWS, the deal is a major victory in its competition with Microsoft and Google LLC for dominance in the AI-cloud market. AWS’s share price rose more than 4 % following the news. For the broader AI industry, it underscores the enormous demand for compute resources as firms race to scale advanced models and support products like ChatGPT.
