OpenAI Eyes India for Stargate Expansion

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has started early discussions with Indian data centre providers including Sify Technologies, Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, and CtrlS Datacenters. The talks focus on bringing its global AI infrastructure initiative—Project Stargate—to India with a facility expected to provide at least 1 gigawatt of compute capacity. Reliance Industries, which is building a major green-powered data centre in Jamnagar, is also being considered as a key partner.

Office and Legal Footprint in India

OpenAI has registered as a legal entity in India and is in the process of setting up a local team. It plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, underlining India’s importance as its second-largest market by user base.

What Is Project Stargate?

Stargate is a $500 billion global AI infrastructure project led by OpenAI with support from partners like SoftBank and Oracle. The initiative aims to build hyperscale computing hubs worldwide in the coming years. India’s involvement would mark a significant expansion of this project across Asia.
