Officer Killed in a Shooting near CDC Campus in Atlanta

On August 8, 2025, a police officer was shot and later died after responding to an active shooter near the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. The officer, David Rose, was a 33-year-old from the DeKalb County Police Department and leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.

What Happened

The shooting began just before 5 p.m., with multiple gunshots fired at CDC buildings, shattering windows. The campus and neighboring Emory University went on lockdown as law enforcement responded. Officer Rose was critically wounded during the incident and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Gunman Found Dead Across the Street

Authorities found the suspected shooter dead inside a nearby CVS store across from the CDC. It is not clear whether the gunman took his own life or was shot by police. No civilians were harmed in the incident, including 92 children in a daycare on the CDC campus.

Investigation Underway, Community Mourns

Local, state, and federal agencies—including the FBI and Georgia Bureau of Investigation—are jointly investigating the incident. Leaders across Georgia, including the governor and mayor, praised first responders for their quick action. The CDC expressed deep sorrow and noted this was a heartbreaking day for their staff and the broader community.
