Odisha Braces For Cyclone Montha, Eight Districts On High Alert

The eastern Indian state of Odisha has placed eight districts on high alert as Cyclone Montha moves closer, with heavy rains, gusty winds and potential flooding expected between October 28 and 29. Authorities have evacuated vulnerable areas and banned fishing operations along the coast.

What The State Is Doing

The districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal have been designated as “red-zone” for imminent risk. 128 rescue and relief teams, including state rapid action forces, have been deployed across these zones. Fishermen have been directed to return to shore and all sea ventures suspended until further notice. Schools in several districts are closed and relief shelters have been readied for evacuation of residents from low-lying and coastal areas.

Weather Forecast And Warnings

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in southern and coastal Odisha districts from Oct 28 onwards, driven by Montha’s outer bands. While the storm is likely to make landfall further south, its effects are projected to intensify in Odisha via wind gusts of around 60-70 km/h and possibly higher and rough sea conditions.

What To Expect

Local authorities are cautioning residents to avoid unnecessary travel, secure loose objects and stay indoors during the storm period. Power cuts, tree-falls and surface flooding are seen as likely. Though no casualties or major damage have been reported yet, the stage is set for a serious weather event.
