NSA Ajit Doval in Moscow Amid Trump Tariff Threats on Oil

India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval has arrived in Moscow for a key diplomatic visit. The trip comes at a time when India is facing renewed pressure from the United States over its continued oil imports from Russia. Doval is expected to hold discussions with senior Russian officials on defence cooperation, energy trade, and regional security.

Trump Threatens Tariff Escalation

U.S. President Donald Trump has recently warned of new sanctions and higher tariffs on Indian imports if India does not scale down its oil trade with Russia. The current 25% tariff rate could be raised sharply, with Trump linking any rollback to a ceasefire deal in Ukraine. He also accused India of buying discounted oil and reselling it for profit, an allegation India has denied.

India’s Energy Policy Remains Firm

Despite U.S. pressure, India continues to purchase over 1.7 million barrels of oil per day from Russia. Officials in New Delhi argue that these imports are essential to national energy security and economic stability. India has maintained that its oil purchases are legal, transparent, and necessary given global supply uncertainties.

Defence and Energy on the Agenda

Doval’s meetings are expected to cover defence-related topics such as ongoing equipment deals and maintenance support, including systems like the S-400 air defence platform. Energy discussions will likely include long-term arrangements for Russian crude and payment mechanisms to avoid future disruptions.

Strategic Balancing Act

The visit reflects India’s ongoing strategy of balancing its global partnerships. While maintaining strong ties with the United States, India is also reinforcing its historical relationship with Russia. Experts believe India’s focus remains on safeguarding its strategic autonomy and ensuring stable energy and defence supplies in an increasingly divided global environment.
