Notification Issued for Vice President Election
The Election Commission of India has issued the official notification for the Vice Presidential election, marking the formal start of the nomination process. The announcement was made on Tuesday, setting the stage for the election to India’s second-highest constitutional office.
Candidates can now file their nominations until August 13. The scrutiny of nominations will be conducted the following day on August 14. If required, the election will be held on August 27, with the results expected the same day. Members of both houses of Parliament—Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha—will vote in the election through a secret ballot.
Current Term of Jagdeep Dhankhar Nears End
The election comes as the current Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, completes his five-year term. Elected in August 2022, Dhankhar was backed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and won with a clear majority. As Vice President, he also serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
While the names of potential candidates have not yet been officially announced, political activity is expected to increase in the coming days as alliances assess their numbers and prepare to field nominees.
Political Stakes High Ahead of 2026 Rajya Sabha Rejig
The Vice Presidential election is significant, especially at a time when control of the Rajya Sabha is a strategic priority for all major parties. With many key bills pending and elections approaching in several states, the choice of Vice President will also have symbolic political weight.
Election Commission officials have assured that all COVID-19 safety protocols and necessary arrangements will be in place for the smooth conduct of the election, should it be contested.
