North Korea’s Kim Pledges Support for Putin
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged unconditional and permanent support for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s policies and decisions, according to North Korean state media. In a letter to Putin, Kim said he would always stand with Russia and respect all of its policy choices, calling the support constant and lasting.
The letter came after a message from Putin, and reflects the deepening ties between Pyongyang and Moscow. The two countries have strengthened their relationship in recent years, including through a strategic partnership and increased military cooperation.
Strategic and Military Context
North Korea and Russia signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in 2024, which includes cooperation in defence, security, and other areas. This agreement has brought the two nations closer, with shared opposition to Western policies and coordinated diplomatic stances.
Kim’s statement also underscores ongoing geopolitical alignments as Russia continues its war in Ukraine. North Korea has expressed support for Russia’s position and has provided various forms of assistance, while Russia has engaged with Pyongyang diplomatically. Joint activities and high-level exchanges have underlined the partnership’s priority for both leaders.
Future Cooperation
Kim said cooperation between the two countries would continue across various fields, reinforcing their long-term alliance. Moscow and Pyongyang are expected to maintain regular diplomatic and strategic coordination moving forward.
