North Korea Reaffirms Support for Russia
North Korea has reaffirmed its support for Russia’s war against Ukraine following high-level talks in Moscow, as Pyongyang and Moscow continue expanding their political, military and economic partnership.
North Korea Backs Russia on Ukraine
North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for their third strategic dialogue. Pyongyang said it would continue supporting Russia’s efforts to defend its sovereignty, security interests and territorial integrity.
The two ministers discussed the war in Ukraine, diplomatic coordination and the implementation of agreements under the countries’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty.
Russia, in turn, expressed support for North Korea’s efforts to protect its security and sovereignty amid tensions with the United States and its regional allies.
Russia-North Korea Strategic Partnership
The treaty signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June 2024 includes a mutual defence commitment if either country faces armed aggression.
North Korea has deployed thousands of soldiers to Russia, including personnel who supported Moscow’s forces during fighting against Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region. Pyongyang has also been accused of supplying Russia with artillery shells, missiles and other weapons.
Analysts say North Korea has received financial assistance, food, energy and military technology in return. Both governments have defended their cooperation as consistent with their bilateral agreement.
Kim Jong Un Russia Visit Speculation
Choe also met Putin at the Kremlin and conveyed greetings from Kim. Putin thanked North Korea for supporting Russia’s military campaign and asked Choe to pass his greetings to the North Korean leader.
The visit has increased speculation that Kim could travel to Russia for talks with Putin. The two leaders last met in Pyongyang in 2024, when Putin invited Kim to make a future visit to Moscow.
