North Korea Fires Missile During US Drills
North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the sea off its east coast on Saturday as the United States and South Korea conducted joint military exercises in the region. The launch added to rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where Pyongyang has frequently criticised allied military drills as a security threat.
North Korea Ballistic Missile Launch
South Korean military authorities said the missile was fired from North Korea’s eastern region and travelled toward the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea. The projectile was detected shortly after launch, and monitoring systems tracked its flight before it landed in the sea.
Officials in Seoul said they were closely analysing the missile’s flight distance, altitude and trajectory to determine its exact type and capabilities.
US South Korea Joint Military Drills
The missile launch came during ongoing joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. The drills are conducted periodically to improve coordination and readiness between the allied forces.
North Korea has consistently opposed such exercises, arguing that they simulate preparations for invasion. Pyongyang has often responded to these drills with weapons tests, including missile launches and military demonstrations.
Rising Tensions On Korean Peninsula
Regional security tensions have remained high as North Korea continues to advance its missile and nuclear programmes. Recent launches have included various short-range and long-range systems that Pyongyang says are meant to strengthen its deterrence capabilities.
South Korea and the United States have condemned these missile tests as violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions and have called for restraint to avoid further escalation on the Korean Peninsula.
