No Penalty For Three Months On Delayed Waqf Registration

The central government has announced that no penalty or punitive action will be taken for the next three months against Waqf property caretakers who could not register on the UMEED portal before the deadline. The registration requirement is part of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which makes it mandatory for all Waqf properties to be listed online.

Why The Grace Period Was Announced

Many caretakers, known as mutawallis, reported delays due to technical issues, missing documents, and limited awareness about the process. Several MPs and community representatives requested the government to allow more time so that genuine cases were not penalised.

The government said the relaxation is intended to assist those who faced genuine difficulties. The deadline itself has not been changed, but action will be suspended during the three-month window.

What Property Owners Must Do

Officials have advised those who still cannot complete registration within this period to approach their state Waqf Tribunal. Under the law, tribunals can grant extensions of up to six additional months on a case-by-case basis.

The Ministry of Minority Affairs has also promised technical support for users and said the aim is full compliance through cooperation, not harsh penalties.

Registration Numbers So Far

More than 5.17 lakh property entries have been initiated or uploaded on the UMEED portal. However, estimates suggest that India has between 8 and 9 lakh Waqf properties, which means a large number are still pending.

State-wise progress has been uneven, with some states completing most entries and others lagging behind due to slower data collection or older documents.
