No Breakthrough in US–Russia Talks on Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin met US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow for nearly five hours as part of renewed efforts to push forward a peace framework for the war in Ukraine. The meeting, held at the Kremlin on December 2, ended without any agreement, according to senior Russian officials.
What Was Discussed
Talks focused on a revised version of a US-backed peace proposal. Russian officials said the discussions touched on multiple elements, but the most critical issue — territorial control — remained unresolved. Moscow maintained that its territorial positions were non-negotiable, while the US delegation sought movement on conditions linked to Ukraine’s sovereignty and long-term security guarantees.
Russia’s Position
Following the meeting, Russian authorities described the talks as “constructive” but said the proposals presented did not meet their expectations. They reiterated that any settlement must recognise Russia’s claims over territories currently under its control.

With no compromise reached, prospects for a near-term ceasefire appear dim. Both sides agreed to continue engaging diplomatically, but the core territorial dispute remains the biggest obstacle.
