Nine Cops Get Death In Sattankulam Case
A court in Madurai has sentenced all nine convicted policemen to death in the 2020 Sattankulam custodial deaths case, one of the most closely watched police brutality cases in Tamil Nadu. The verdict comes nearly six years after the deaths of P. Jayaraj and his son J. Benicks, whose case had triggered national outrage and demands for police accountability.
Sattankulam Custodial Deaths Verdict
The First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai awarded the death penalty to all nine policemen convicted in the case. The court had earlier found them guilty in the double murder of Jayaraj and Benicks, who died after being taken into custody in June 2020 in Sattankulam, in present-day Thoothukudi district. The ruling marks one of the rarest instances in which police personnel have received the maximum punishment in a custodial death case.
Jayaraj Benicks Case Background
Jayaraj and Benicks were detained during the Covid-19 lockdown over allegations linked to keeping their shop open beyond permitted hours. The case drew widespread public anger after allegations of brutal custodial torture emerged. Both men later died in hospital, and the incident became a national flashpoint on custodial violence, abuse of power and police reform. The investigation was eventually handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation after sustained pressure and judicial scrutiny.
Tamil Nadu Police Accountability Debate
The sentence is likely to revive a wider debate on custodial violence and the criminal justice system in India. For the victims’ family, the verdict represents the end of a long legal fight. For the larger public, it sends a strong message on accountability in cases involving abuse by law enforcement officials. The case has remained symbolically important because it exposed how ordinary detention over a minor issue could escalate into a fatal abuse of state power.
