NHAI Scraps KYV Process for FASTag Issuance

The National Highways Authority of India has decided to discontinue the Know Your Vehicle process for FASTag issuance for cars, jeeps and vans. The move is aimed at simplifying the FASTag activation process and reducing inconvenience faced by vehicle owners. The revised system will come into effect from February 1, 2026.

Changes in FASTag activation process

Under the updated framework, FASTags will be activated only after vehicle details are validated through the VAHAN database before activation. If vehicle data is not available on VAHAN, issuing banks will be required to verify details using the vehicle’s registration certificate. The earlier practice of conducting KYV checks after FASTag activation has been removed to streamline the process.

Relief for existing FASTag users

For vehicles that already have FASTags, the KYV process will no longer be carried out routinely. It will be undertaken only in specific cases such as complaints related to misuse, incorrect tagging or other discrepancies. This is expected to reduce repeated documentation requests and follow ups for existing users.

Benefits for highway users

NHAI said the decision will benefit millions of motorists by making FASTag issuance faster and more user friendly. By removing post activation KYV checks, the authority aims to improve efficiency, reduce grievances and ensure smoother electronic toll collection across national highways.
