New Weapons, Specialist Units To Boost Army’s Capabilities
The Indian Army has completed the creation of 380 specialist drone platoons, codenamed “Ashni.” These units are designed to provide advanced surveillance and combat capabilities using unmanned systems.
New Commando Battalions
In the next six months, the Army will also raise 25 light commando battalions, to be known as “Bhairav.” These battalions are meant to strengthen rapid-response operations and bridge the gap between regular infantry and special forces.
Weapons Procurement
Alongside these structural changes, the Army is moving ahead with emergency procurement of U.S.-made Javelin anti-tank missile systems. These are expected to enhance frontline combat power in high-intensity warfare. The induction will also be highlighted during Infantry Day (Shaurya Diwas) on October 27.
Strategic Significance
The new units and weapons are intended to address threats along sensitive borders with China and Pakistan, especially in mountainous terrain. Analysts believe these steps show a shift toward modern warfare doctrine focused on unmanned systems, mobility and precision firepower.
