Netanyahu, Trump Focus Talks on Gaza Hostages, Ceasefire
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington for the second time in two days, with the top agenda being the release of hostages held in Gaza. Netanyahu described the meeting as focused and productive, emphasizing that both leaders were aligned in their efforts to secure the hostages’ freedom and dismantle Hamas’ military command.
Gaza Hostages and Ceasefire Proposal
During the meeting, Netanyahu confirmed that a 60-day ceasefire deal is currently on the table. Under this plan, 10 living hostages would be freed, and the remains of 9 deceased captives returned. The deal, under indirect negotiation through Qatar in Doha, is reportedly close to finalization, with only one issue left unresolved.
While progress has been made diplomatically, Netanyahu reiterated that military operations in Gaza will not pause until Hamas is rendered militarily and administratively ineffective. He stated, “We are determined to eliminate Hamas’ capabilities, both governmental and military, and we will not stop until that mission is complete.”
Strategic Dialogue and Regional Security
The discussions also covered broader regional dynamics. Netanyahu referenced joint operations with the United States against Iranian infrastructure, which he claimed have already weakened Tehran’s influence. Both sides also reaffirmed their interest in expanding the Abraham Accords, signaling intent to deepen Israeli ties with more Arab nations.
Netanyahu praised President Trump for what he described as “unwavering support” for Israel’s strategic goals, noting that their cooperation has been essential in countering threats in the region.
High-Level Engagements and Symbolism
Aside from Trump, Netanyahu held meetings with Vice President J.D. Vance, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and other congressional leaders. In a symbolic gesture, Netanyahu handed over a nomination letter for Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize, highlighting the personal rapport between the two leaders.
Despite growing international pressure for a ceasefire, Israel’s leadership remains steadfast that only a complete dismantling of Hamas will bring lasting security to the region.
