Netanyahu Signals Plan to Reduce US Military Aid

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel hopes to gradually reduce its dependence on United States military aid over the next decade. He said the aim is to strengthen Israel’s self-reliance by expanding domestic defence capabilities while continuing close strategic cooperation with Washington.

Netanyahu said Israel deeply values long-standing US support but believes its defence industry has matured enough to shoulder a greater share of national security needs. He indicated that the long-term goal would be to phase down military assistance in stages rather than end it abruptly.

Focus on Domestic Defence Production

The Prime Minister highlighted plans to invest more in Israel’s domestic arms and defence manufacturing sector. He said increased production and innovation would allow Israel to meet its own requirements and expand defence exports, which have grown in recent years.

He added that greater self-sufficiency would give Israel more flexibility in defence planning while maintaining strong alliances.

Existing US-Israel Defence Ties

The United States currently provides Israel with billions of dollars in military assistance each year under a long-term agreement. Any future reduction would depend on Israel’s capabilities and continued coordination with the US.

Netanyahu’s remarks point to a strategic shift aimed at long-term independence rather than an immediate change in military cooperation.
