Netanyahu Says Gaza Truce May Enter Next Phase Soon
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the truce plan in Gaza could soon move into its second phase. He stated that the first phase of the deal is “almost complete” and only one final condition remains before the next steps can begin.
Final Step Of First Phase
According to Netanyahu, the handover of the remains of the last Israeli hostage held in Gaza is still pending. Once that process is completed, he said the transition to phase two may start. The first phase involved the release of most living hostages and a partial pullback of Israeli forces from some areas.
Netanyahu added that Israel is coordinating closely with international partners who helped broker the agreement, including the United States.
What Phase Two Could Include
The second phase, based on the current draft plan, would involve several elements. These include the disarmament of Hamas, a further withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and the deployment of an international security force. A temporary administration for civilian governance may also be set up under international oversight.
Officials involved in the discussions said that the structure and composition of the international force have not yet been finalised. These decisions are expected to be more complex than the earlier steps.
Difficult Negotiations Ahead
Netanyahu acknowledged that phase two will be more challenging. Disarmament, administration control, and security guarantees remain sensitive subjects. Gaza’s political groups have not yet agreed on all terms. There is also international concern about maintaining stability and preventing a return to violence.
Hamas has signalled a willingness to discuss arrangements, but has not committed to giving up all weapons. Talks continue through mediators.
