Nepal Protests Death Toll Hits 51
The death toll from the Gen Z-led protests in Nepal has risen to 51 as of September 12, 2025. The casualties include protesters, police officers, prisoners, and other individuals.
What Sparked The Protests
The unrest began after the Nepal government blocked 26 major social media platforms, citing non-compliance with registration rules. Young people protested not only the ban but also broader issues like corruption, nepotism, and inequality.
Government Resignation And Reversal
Following the protests and deaths, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and some ministers announced resignations. The government later lifted the social media bans in an attempt to ease tensions.
Arrests, Escapes And Security Measures
More than 12,000 prisoners reportedly escaped during the unrest. Security forces have been deployed across several cities. Curfews remain in effect in some areas.
