Nepal PM Oli Resigns as Protests Escalate

Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has resigned following weeks of Gen Z-led demonstrations against corruption and a government-imposed social media ban. The protests turned violent across Kathmandu and other cities, leaving at least 19 people dead and hundreds injured in clashes with security forces.

Ban Reversed, Ministers Step Down

Amid mounting unrest, the government lifted its ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, taking moral responsibility for the handling of the crisis. Several cabinet members and lawmakers also stepped down under pressure.

Political Fallout

The protests highlighted anger among young Nepalese over corruption, nepotism, and curbs on free expression. With the crisis deepening and the army reportedly pressing for a political resolution, Oli announced his resignation to open the way for a new leadership.
