Nepal PM Distances Country from China’s Global Security Initiative
Following his meeting with President Xi Jinping at the SCO summit in Tianjin, Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli was reported by the Chinese Foreign Ministry to have expressed explicit support for China’s Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI). The statement claimed Nepal looked forward to deeper involvement in these programmes and valued China’s role in global affairs.
Nepali Officials Refute the Claim
Nepal’s delegation in Beijing quickly rejected the Chinese statement. Culture Minister Badri Pandey clarified that none of these initiatives were discussed during the bilateral meeting. He stated, “No issue or agenda of this kind was raised or discussed during the [Xi–Oli] meeting.” A senior aide added that there is no commitment from Nepal regarding the GSI or related initiatives.
Bilateral Concerns Highlighted
Oli also raised concerns about India-China border trade through the Lipulekh pass, asserting that the area belongs to Nepal and expressing strong objections. He reiterated Nepal’s interest in enhancing cooperation with China on various fronts—such as trade, investment, and climate resilience—and conveyed appreciation for China’s support in multilateral forums.
