Nepal Lifts Social Media Ban After Deadly Protests

The Nepalese government has lifted its ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reddit. The ban was introduced last week after these platforms failed to comply with new registration rules.

Protests Turn Deadly

The shutdown triggered widespread protests led largely by Gen Z youth. Demonstrations against corruption and economic mismanagement escalated into violent clashes with police. At least 19 people were killed and hundreds injured during the unrest.

Curfews and Restrictions

Authorities imposed indefinite curfews in Kathmandu and restricted movement in several other cities to restore order. Schools were closed, and public gatherings were curtailed as security forces attempted to control the situation.

Government Response

Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung confirmed that services had been restored and appealed for calm. Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli expressed regret over the violence, announced compensation for families of the deceased, free medical treatment for the injured, and set up a 15-day probe panel to investigate the events.

Political Fallout

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned, accepting moral responsibility for the handling of the crisis. The protests highlighted rising frustration among Nepal’s younger population, with demands for greater accountability and transparency in governance.
