Nepal Imposes Travel Ban On Ex-PM Over Protest Violence
Nepal’s interim government has placed travel restrictions on former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and four other senior former officials following violent protests that shook the country. The ban prevents them from leaving Nepal, and they may also need permission to leave Kathmandu Valley.
Commission Recommends Action After Unrest
The move follows the recommendation of a probe commission investigating recent protests. The demonstrations, driven largely by youth activism, escalated into major unrest, with reports that the parliament, Singha Durbar, and other government buildings were set ablaze. At least 73 people died over two days of violence.
Other Officials Also Barred
Besides Oli, the ban covers former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, former National Investigation Department head Hutaraj Thapa, and two other ex-bureaucrats. Authorities say it’s part of efforts to ensure accountability and prevent suspects from evading investigation.
Political Tension and Public Demand
The protests began as a reaction to a sweeping social media ban and broader anger at corruption and lack of transparency. The intensity of public discontent forced Prime Minister Oli to resign, and Sushila Karki now leads the interim government until elections in March 2026. The ban on travel is seen as a step to ensure investigations proceed without interference.
