Nepal Blocks Social Media Platforms Over Non-Registration

The Government of Nepal has ordered the shutdown of several major social media platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Reddit, after they failed to register under new regulatory requirements.

Mandatory Registration Ignored

The new directives required platforms to establish a legal presence in Nepal, appoint a liaison officer, and designate a grievance handler. Authorities had issued multiple notices since late 2023, setting a final deadline of August 28. Most platforms did not comply, leading to the immediate enforcement of the ban.

Platforms Still Accessible

Apps such as TikTok and Viber continue to operate because they completed the registration process. Others, including Telegram, are undergoing review and could be reinstated once compliance checks are cleared.

Free Speech Concerns

Rights groups and press freedom advocates have criticized the move, warning it restricts Nepalis’ access to information and limits digital expression. The government, however, has defended the action, saying the regulations are necessary to ensure accountability, address harmful content, and safeguard national security.
