Nearly 1,000 Tourists Trapped by Blizzard at Everest
A severe blizzard has left almost 1,000 people stranded on the eastern slope of Mount Everest in the Tibet region. The storm, which struck late Friday and continued into Saturday, has blocked routes and buried camps in deep snow.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Rescue teams, aided by local villagers, have mobilised to dig out pathways and reach isolated camps. So far, at least 350 trekkers have been evacuated to the nearby township of Qudang. Conditions remain dangerous, with cold, high altitude, and heavy snow complicating operations.
Cause and Local Response
The storm struck at altitudes above 4,900 metres, cutting off road access and suspending ticket sales to the Everest Scenic Area. Authorities have shut down entry to the region amid ongoing risks.
Regional Impact
On the Nepali side of the Himalayas, heavy rains triggered landslides and flash floods that killed at least 47 people. Roads were washed away, and dozens more remain missing.
The situation is still evolving. Rescuers continue to work against time and terrain to reach those left behind. No fatalities have been confirmed among the stranded group so far.
