NDRF Team Deployed to Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli District

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed to the Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu ahead of expected heavy rainfall, the state government announced. The deployment comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings of strong rains in southern districts.

Preparedness Measures Underway

Officials said multiple teams from the NDRF and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been positioned in strategic locations within Tirunelveli and surrounding areas. These units are tasked with rapid response activities including evacuation, search and rescue, and relief distribution, in coordination with district authorities.

Weather Warning And Risk Zones

The IMD has forecast “heavy to very heavy rainfall” for Tirunelveli and nearby districts over the coming days, elevating risk levels for flooding, landslides and urban waterlogging. District collectors have been instructed to keep relief-camps, emergency shelters and medical facilities ready, and residents in low-lying areas have been asked to remain alert.

Key Priorities And Challenges

Authorities said their focus now is on keeping communication lines open, monitoring vulnerable zones and ensuring that road access remains clear for relief operations. One of the main challenges is reaching remote hill and ghat areas in the event of landslides or road blockages. The Tamil Nadu government reiterated that these deployments are precautionary and aimed at minimising potential disruption.
