NDA Nominates CP Radhakrishnan for Vice-President as Opposition Plans Its Response
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has formally nominated Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as its candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, scheduled for September 9, 2025. The decision was made at a Parliamentary Board meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Radhakrishnan’s nomination comes after the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Radhakrishnan, a senior BJP leader, has long been associated with the party’s organizational growth in Tamil Nadu. His selection is being seen as a move that underscores the ruling alliance’s attempt to balance regional representation with political experience.
Strategic and Regional Significance
At 68, Radhakrishnan hails from Tamil Nadu and belongs to the Gounder community, an influential segment in the state. He has served as BJP’s Tamil Nadu president and was elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore. Beyond his parliamentary career, he has held gubernatorial roles in Jharkhand, Telangana (additional charge), and Puducherry before being appointed Governor of Maharashtra.
Known for his non-controversial image and cordial relations with leaders across party lines, Radhakrishnan’s nomination is also being interpreted as part of the BJP’s strategy to strengthen its influence in southern states, where the party is aiming to expand its base.
INDIA Bloc’s Response
The opposition INDIA bloc is expected to announce its candidate soon, with discussions underway among senior leaders. Sources suggest the alliance may put forward a “non-political” figure to highlight its contrast with the NDA’s choice. However, the bloc faces the challenge of consolidating numbers within the electoral college.
If the opposition fails to field a united and strong candidate, Radhakrishnan is likely to secure a smooth path to victory given the NDA’s numerical advantage. The formal election process will see nominations close on August 21, followed by polling, if required, on September 9.
